Losing the weight may seem like an impossible dream. People start out with incredible zeal, which quickly peters out and turns into inactivity. Why do some people have an easier time of it than others? Some people can lose weight and stay light for an extended period of time. How does someone lose weight and manage to keep it off?

Identifying your goals, whether it pertains to a certain amount of weight lost or physical aesthetics, is the first step to losing weight. You must also decide if you would just like to drop a few pounds or if you want to lose so much weight that you will have to buy all new clothes. Figure out why losing weight is important to you. Is it because you want more energy, or because you have a specific goal in mind, like dropping a few dress sizes?

Keep a weight loss journal listing your progress. Only weigh yourself one time weekly. Don't weigh yourself too often, or you'll get discouraged with the less than impressive progress. Keep a ledger that lists all the food you eat, along with the amount of calories consumed. Make sure you also list any drinks and snacks. Simply writing down what you eat and drink can prevent you from making poor choices.

The worst thing you can do is make meal decisions when you are hungry. Planning your meals in advance and keeping healthy snacks on hand will help you avoid reaching for unhealthy foods. Pack a healthy lunch and brown-bag it instead of eating out to both save money and enjoy a more nutritious meal.

The key to losing weight and keeping it off is to eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, and exercise daily. Some people find that sticking to an effective workout program is a lot harder than sticking to a healthy diet. Find ways to make exercising less of a chore, perhaps by working out with a partner or finding an activity you enjoy. If you can do the two together, even better! Start cycling or hiking with a friend or join the same gym.

Removing all of the junk food from your place is probably the best thing that you can do at this point. By filling your kitchen with fresh fruits and vegetables, you won't have the temptation available. If eating unhealthy foods requires the effort of leaving the house to buy them, you will choose the easier, more convenient option of eating the healthy foods already available.

Get help from your friends. Your friends are sure to want to help. If you are surrounded with positivity and people who support you, your chances of success will increase dramatically. A support system can help you stay motivated to continue. Whenever you feel your enthusiasm starting to flag, feel free to seek their assistance.
