This is what the movie industry has come to boys and girls, and they're not even bothering to deny it anymore. The studios aren't even going to pretend they care about the art of film, now.
In a recent speech made by Walt Disney Animation Studios chief technical officer Andy Hendrickson, he openly endorsed a concept that has been quietly building previously unspoken momentum (epitomized by TF3). Hendrickson stated that the major movie studios should no longer focus on quality storytelling, and instead focus on tentpole films which feature loads of eye-popping visuals. "People say 'It's all about the story.' When you're making tentpole films, bull####. A tentpole film is one where you can seed the desire to see the film to everyone in every distribution channel. It's the only kind of film you can spend $100 million marketing." He even sited Disney's own Alice in Wonderland, saying, "The story isn't very good, but visual spectacle brought people in droves. And Johnny Depp didn't hurt."
