Snelsmore Common covers about 250 acres, making it the largest expanse of lowland heath left in Berkshire. The site is designated a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and has been a Country Park since 1972. It is a mixture of habitats including heather, gorse, wet bog and woodland, each supporting its own flora species. Three types of heather, mosses and lichens grow amongst the floor-covering plants. The mires (bogs) contain many rare sphagnum mosses, sedges and rushes, which thrive in wet areas. The woodlands contain oak, birch, beech, hazel, chestnut and willow trees. In the spring the woodland floor is covered with bluebells.
